A Family of Artisans

Trend Custom Tailors' family is representative of The Canadian Mosaic, which includes: European-born masters and founders, Asian-born chemisiers and couturiers, as well as an East Indian master embroider.

  • Tom Battista

    The Late Mr. Battista was taught the tailoring trade by Giovanni DiMario, beginning at the age of twelve, in the town of Civitanova Del Sannio in Central Italy, in the region of Molise.

    He came to Canada in 1958, and began his first job at Richmond Clothes doing sleeve hanging and general operations. While working at Richmond Clothes, Mr. Battista was promoted to Assistant Foreman and helped produce suits for celebrities such as, The Beatles. He also worked in the tailoring field for W.K. Cook, Sheffeilman, Parkmaner, Paul Riviere and Tip Top.

    Mr. Battista put the culmination of his experience together, and founded Trend Custom Tailors in 1972. His vision continues to be the inspiration for the atelier.

  • Spiridon Allagas

    Mr. Allagas was born in Greece in a small city known as Kalamata South Greece, in the region of Peloponisos. He was trained in tailoring by Pericles Marianos and Aristedis Stamonlis at the age of twelve.

    Mr. Allagas came to Canada in 1969 and began employment with Paul Riviere. As one of the original founders of Trend, Mr. Allagas still contributes to its philosophy and preservation of Trend's trade, through instruction of the younger tailors in training.

  • Deepak Solanki

    Our resident, master embroider hails from the village of Navsari, in Gujarati. Deepak came to Canada as a 3rd generation master from India. He embarked on mastering his his art at the age of 16, founded Sai Embroidery in 1995 and now he continues his trade as Trend Custom Tailors' in-house master embroider.

  • Don Fabien Lee

    Mr. Lee was born in Trinidad and came to Canada in 1991. In 1994, he achieved a BSC Degree (Bachelor of Science for Home Economics), majoring in Textile Manufacturing and Design at the University of Western Ontario. In 1998, Mr. Lee earned a BAA Degree (Bachelor of Applied Arts) from Ryerson University.

    From 1994-2000, Mr. Lee worked on a seven-year apprenticeship with Mr. Battista and Mr. Allagas at Trend Custom Tailors. During this time, he was recognized with many awards for his work.

  • Yan Yuni Qun

    Yan Qun was born in Guangdong, China and first arrived in Toronto in 1999. Our senior seamstress has been perfecting her craft for 17 years and has been apart of our family for 10 of those years. She is passion, precise and dedicated.

  • Jun Ada Ho

    Jun Ho is a China-native who came to Canada in 1986. sewing and couture-making is something she has always been accustom to as she would perform alterations, repairs and make garments straight out of her home before coming to Trend. She became a diverse and talented member of Trend Custom Tailors in 2006 and has been adding her creative touch to suit jackets and overcoats ever since.

  • Sun Fanny Fung

    After relocating to Toronto from Guangdong, China, Fanny soon found a home at Trend where she oversees shirt construction as the senior chemisier (shirt maker).

  • Marsha Ali

    Marsha Ali hails all the way from Trinidad and Tobago. With an administrative background, she acts as a personal assistant to Don as well as the head administrator and production manager.

  • Kimberly Poonkong

    After leaving her home in Trinidad, Kimberly travelled to Minnesota, USA where she attended the college of Saint Benedict and received a BAA in Fine Art. Soon after, she moved to Toronto, ON where she attended George Brown and received a diploma in Fashion Design. Kimberly is the youngest tailor-in-training at Trend and is responsible for most of the button work that goes on in-house. With an immense passion for the business, she continues to show growth and dedication towards becoming a master tailor herself.
